AfricaCom closes for another year – hailed as the best telecoms event. Our representative attended the show and we will soon be posting photos and videos of the event.

With 4,000 attendees from 120+ countries attending over the 2 days, the AfricaCom congress held this week in Cape Town provided a great showcase of the continent’s dynamic telecommunications market.

Now in its 12th year, the event has grown to become the annual meeting place for market leaders and innovators from the whole telecommunications sector:

established and alternative operators from the fixed, mobile and wireless sides, network infrastructure vendors, telecoms solutions providers from across the world and locally, investors, consultants and more.

“AfricaCom is the best event we’ve been to, said Angela Gahagan of MTN; the attendance has been great and MTN is proud to be associated with this kind of event which allows people to show what Africa has to offer”.

The 200-stand exhibition provided opportunities for participants to learn about the latest technologies and new products, while the high-level conference brought together CEOs and senior executive of the leading companies to share their expertise and strategies for their markets:

operators such MTN, Zain Africa, Orange, Vodacom, Etisalat, Safaricom, Comium and solutions provider from international infrastructure vendors to local companies offering specialised solutions for the African markets. The strategies to major points of discussion over the two days were strategies to continue growth, innovative services for the local markets, cost-effective strategies and broadband connectivity.

“The high attendance and the level of the debates held this week at AfricaCom is testimony to the continent’s great opportunities, said Julie Rey of organisers Informa Telecoms & Media; while most of the world is facing challenging economic conditions, African companies are leading the way with innovative models and services which enable continued growth”.

For the second year, the AfricaCom Awards were held at the end of the opening day to celebrate the achievements of Africa’s telecommunications players, with a glittering ceremony hosted by comedian David Kau. Special guest Yvonne Chaka Chaka delighted the audience with an impromptu song to help raise funds for Unicef. “We are delighted to support Unicef as the official charity of the event, said Emily Cottam from Informa Telecoms & Media; this year, the event helped us raise 225,000 rand for their worthy cause, even more than last year”.
